John Calvin Jones and Sarah Elizabeth Husky and Nancy J. Coan

I had a puzzle to put together in order to follow Nancy J. Coan so I thought I would document the work I did in case someone else needs it.

John Coan (aka Cowan) was born about 1816 in Ireland to William Cowan and Elizabeth Baxter. He was in Union County, SC for the 1850 Census. He had married a Shurbutt (aka Sherbert, Shurlbutt, Shurburt) and they had 3 children. The 1850 Census was taken 3 mos after the baby's birth and John's wife is dead. She may have died in childbirth. The 3 children are living with their maternal grandfather, Zadok Shurbutt. John is a laborer living at a nearby farm.

Nancy Coan married John Calvin Jones. J.C. Jones was born 10/1851 (according to the 1900 Census) in NC to James Lewis Jones and Jemima Jane Brooks. James Lewis Jones was born 7/19/1822 in NC and died 2/1865 in SC. Jemima Jane Brooks was born 8/17/1827 in Anson County, NC and died 6/23/1917 in Cherokee County, SC to Jesse Bradford Brooks and Ann Phillips.

So how did Nancy Coan meet John Calvin Jones? Well, it seems that J.C.'s mother was Jemima Jane Brooks and Nancy Coan's stepmother was Mary Brooks. Jemima and Mary were sisters. So Nancy married her stepmother's nephew. J.C. married his Aunt Mary's stepdaughter.

Cansada Coan died 9/7/1940 in Whitney, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC. She is buried in the Whitney Community Cemetery by the Whitney Freewill Baptist Church on Damson St, Spartanburg, SC.

Cansada was the old lady in Andrew Pittman Jones life. I'm sure she must have been like a grandmother to his children. Her grave looks to be kept in good shape so someone cared about her.

Now how does all this come together in my genealogy work? Stan's great great great Grandfather was John Cowan, his great great grandfather was Zadok Coan (Nancy and Cansada's brother), his great grandfather was Will Cohen (notice the spelling of the name keeps changing), his paternal grandmother was Mabel Louise Cohen Harris.
