Something happened (polio?) that caused him to be lame and he had to use crutches the rest of his life. Evidently his father, Lewis, was concerned for Avery's ability to make a living so he made sure Avery had a good education for the times. Avery attended Reeds Accademy. About 1897 he gained ownership of a dry goods general store and the house beside it in the community of Churchland, Davidson County, NC. He was also made the Postmaster there in 1897.

My Grandma Vivian married Oscar Alexander Huneycutt on 9/2/1922 at the Burkhead Methodist Parsonage, Winston-Salem, NC. But Great Aunt Bill lived with her mother until her mother died. Then Bill lived on in their little house for 31 years until she had to move into a nursing home before her death. She never married or worked outside the home.
After Grandpa Avery's death, Granny Barnes must have sold the store and house. She had a house big enough to take in boarders and she boarded girls at a girl's school. Later she and Bill moved into a small 4 room house that her son-in-law, Oscar Huneycutt, built for her. Oscar was a carpenter and farmer all of his life. He and a friend went and camped there while they built the house. He would tell how cold it was because it was winter. The house never had indoor plumbing. Even as a little girl I was amazed at how primitive it was. They had a wood stove for heat and a well outside the back door for water and a privvie for a bathroom. I've often wondered why she had to move out of the larger house and into the little house.
I'm thinking it had to have been the early 1960's when I visited. I was born in 1959 and I was a little girl. I remember Granny Barnes being so thin and Aunt Bill was gruff. We rarely ever saw them so I was a little scared of Aunt Bill. I remember another time when Grandma Vivian and Aunt Ruth took me to visit Uncle Gilmer and Aunt Mackie at their 2 story farm house. I remember the big tree in the front yard that we sat under (again, in the time before air conditioners). Even when we would go visit Dad's parents, they had a big pecan tree in the backyard and every Sunday afternoon the whole family pulled chairs out under the pecan tree. The grownups would visit and talk while the men whittled and the women snapped beans or peeled peaches. I often took a nap on a homemade quilt spread out under the tree. Here is a photo of Grandma Vivian sitting out under the pecan tree.
